Fishing the North Branch with RKP rod

Filed under: Reviews — by DRoush @ 4:24 pm

Last weekend I had the chance to go fishing on the North Branch in Lovells Michigan with Richard Perry. I used one of his 6 ft 3 wt  bamboo rods he made. We had a great time fishing for brookies and we also had some bonus browns. The RKP 3 wt fished great. Check out Richards web site at  www.rkpcanerods.com

Catfish on the Flyrod

Filed under: Around Ohio Fly Fishing — by DRoush @ 9:50 am

Well it is that time of the year in Ohio when we have low water in the streams and it is not a good time to go trout fishing and stress them out. They might not make it after you caught them and release them. So try this carp or catfish. Lots of flyrodders have been carping a long time but the catfish have not been a fish that fly fisherman think of. Last week most of my fishing has been fishing for those big cats and I have been doing real well on the them. If you are fishing streams try a crayfish pattern they are very successful on cats. I have been using my 7 Wt rod on them just like I do on carp. The catfish will give you a really good fight and they are a very strong  fish that you will not have to worry about releasing back and dying on you. Streamers work very well also if you match the to they prey in the stream. So next time you are sitting at home wishing for rain to bring the rivers up get out and go fishing for some catfish.

Crappie Fishing with a Fly Rod

Filed under: Around Ohio Fly Fishing — by DRoush @ 9:22 pm

Fly fishing for crappie with a fly rod is a whole lot of fun. Most people don’t think of fishing for them with a fly but they take a streamer pattern very easy. My family wanted a nice meal of fish so I went to my fathers lake and filled a bucket almost full in 45min. I used a 3 wt Hardy fiber glass rod and a white and chartreuse minnow pattern. You must fish the streamer with fast strips on the fly with 6 to 12 inch strips. Don’t wait much between strips. Crappie are very aggressive in the spring. You will have to slow the strip down when the water gets hot but it will be harder to catch as many when the water warms up. Crappie is a great pan fish for eating and in a small lake you can remove a lot of them to keep the balance. The work of the fishing trip was not the fishing but the cleaning but it takes a lot for 10 people. So next time the rivers are blown out in the spring think about a pond or a lake for some nice crappie fishing. Most of the time I myself always practice catch and release but pan fish at my fathers lake is fair game.

Fishing Cold Creek

Filed under: Around Ohio Fly Fishing — by DRoush @ 7:46 am

I took two guys up Thursday May 21st up to Cold Creek fishing in the evening and we saw many browns and bows in the 4 to 5 lbs class. We did very well fishing and caught many fish. The dry fly fishing was not that good we had to use wets and streamers to have success. We did have a spinner fall just at dark but it did not last long. The fish did not feed on the top till about 9:00 pm. But they had a great time. Do not forget the bug dope or they will eat you up already! We use princes, zebras, elk hair caddis, and buggers on the trip. The hatches should be getting better anytime now.

Fly Fishing Thermometer

Filed under: Reviews — by DRoush @ 4:23 pm

Well we just got in the new William Joseph infrared thermometer and they look real good. I have tested them and you can get a water temp in  one second. It is nice that you have a thermometer that you don’t have to worrier about breaking spilling what is in it in the water, ground and your car. I will be making more test on this one but it seems the way to go for your next stream thermometer. You don’t even have to bend over and hold that old thermometer in the water anymore.

RKP Bamboo Fly Rods

Filed under: Reviews — by DRoush @ 8:32 pm

I purchased a RKP rod at the bamboo bash last weekend fron a rod maker from Michigan. His name is Richard Perry and it is a very nice looking rod and I was able to fish it Tuesday and also caught some nice browns on it. This bamboo rod is sweet! The taper of the rod is the makers own taper and it is a 7 ft. 6 wt. rod.The rod is a fast action rod with alot of back bone. The rod is a modification of his #3 taper which he calls it #3C. A very strong, fast, and noticeably lighter rod than the conventional #3. He also makes this same rod in a 5 wt. If you are looking for a faster action bamboo rod this would be one to look at. I love mine and I have is link to his web page on my links or his adress is www.rkpcanerods.com. Check his web site out and the rod is around $750.00 depending on what you want. Richard is a very helpful man and will try to answer anything he can for you. So check his site out and talk to him he makes a nice rod to fish with.

Ohio Steelhead Have Left the Building

Filed under: Around Ohio Fly Fishing — by DRoush @ 7:50 pm

Well, here we are at the end of another steelhead year. We went fishing today and didn’t even see one steelhead. But life was good on the way back we stopped at the Clearfork river and caught a few browns. That made the day a lot better.  Five months from now we will be steelhead fishing again. That is not that long. Now we can fish for trout and all of the warm water fish.

Till next fall
